Dan Kirkley has passed away


 

Obituary

     Daniel A. Kirkley, 74, of Fayetteville died peacefully at home after a long illness.  Born in Syracuse, Dan graduated from Fayetteville-Manlius High School.  Dan worked as a machinist specializing in computer  aided design and programing automated machinery.

     He had been active in assisting the ABC program at Fayetteville-Manlius School and was a member of the Manlius Historical Society and the Fayetteville Senior Center.  Though Dan lived in Canada for 25 years of his life, Fayetteville was always his home.  He loved the Fayetteville Library and spent many hours there  since moving back to Fayetteville. 

     He was an avid cyclist, frequently seen around the Village.  In 1976 he took a US Bicentennial cycle trip over the Rocky Mountains.  He was a former member of the Onondaga Cycling Club.  He belonged to Ashbridge’s Bay Yacht Club in Canada and enjoyed officiating at CORK sailing races.

     He is predeceased by his parents, Dr. George and Freda Kirkley.  He is survived by four siblings, Cynthia Kirkley of Baldwinsville, NY, David Kirkley of East Syracuse, Laurel (Peter) Notturno of Canton, OH and Scott (Martha) Kirkley of Rochester, NY; four nieces and nephews and four great-nieces and great-nephews.

     A private family graveside service will be held at a later date.

The passing of Jon Flatt

 

Obituary

Jon Joseph Flatt, 73, of Westdale, NY passed away peacefully on his own terms, Sunday March 6, 2022 at 10:58am at his home. The youngest son of five children (Dorothy Flatt, Manlius, NY, Mary Jo Burrows, San Diego, CA, Sam Flatt, Cleveland, NY, and Elsie McConnell, Naperville, IL), Jon was born to Joseph M. & Gwendolyn Williams Flatt on June 3, 1948. He attended Fayetteville-Manlius High School, Class of 1966. He was married to Jacqueline R. Casler of Manlius, NY for 25 years.

After Jon attended Syracuse Brick Laying School, he went on to become an accomplished mason of both brick and stone. At that time, Jon was involved with the Dormitory Authority of New York State. Later, in 1973, he took a job with the USPS in Fayetteville, NY eventually retiring in 2004 as the Postmaster in Westdale, NY 13483.

Jon was instrumental in the reconstruction of the Westdale Dam. Reaching out to his local officials (especially Jack Plumley) he helped to ensure that the area became a Class Three Wetlands. The self-proclaimed Mayor of Frog Hollow (also honorary Frog Hollow Highway superintendent), Jon is survived by Julie Simmons Hotaling of Westdale, NY, his life partner of the last 30 years. Also, his three sons; Jason Flatt, Shelburne, VT, Jamie Flatt, Camden, NY and Jeff Flatt and his wife, Sarah, Cleveland, NY. Jon had six grandchildren, three girls and three boys.

As per Jon’s wishes there will be a gathering to celebrate his life later this summer. He desired no funeral or services. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of LaRobardiere Funeral Home, Inc., Camden, NY. Memorial contributions may be made to the NRA or Ducks Unlimited in lieu of flowers
