Penny Zimmerman Jackson

Hi ..

I actually have something to report!

Last Thursday I officially retired from serving on the board of our local YMCA at their annual meeting. During my 24 years on the Board I served in a number of ways including two stints as chair of the annual campaign and one tour-of-duty as board chair. I was touched with kind remarks at both my last board meeting and t the annual meeting. I was later stunned when, at the conclusion of the annual meeting, I was presented with the Y's highest honor, its "Character in Action" award. This occasionally-awarded (not annual) award is given to a community member who they believe lives a life which evidences the Y's key values of caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility. I was/am both humbled and honored.

There you go!

Wayne Trivelpiece

Hi Debby,
I see Jim Myers already told you we are headed into the wilds of Utah (Canyonlands and Arches Nat'l Parks) next week for some hiking and "guy" time. I'm really looking forward to it and we promise that we will send you an update with photos upon our return. Jim and Marsha will drive me back home to Ramona after our trip and stay the weekend of June 6-7 with us. The rest of my summer is shaping up nicely. Sue and I will head to an Antarctic meeting in Bergen, Norway for 2 weeks in early July before returning to Boston (Sue's home town) for a couple weeks of vacation time. During the time back East, we will visit colleges in New England and NY that my oldest daughter (Sara) is interested in applying to next fall and attend a wedding in Vermont for one of my recent field assistants from Antarctica. We also hope to make it as far as Manlius (Caz) and drop in on Pamela and Doc Revercomb for a short visit. Thanks again for keeping us all touchand stay tuned for more soon.
Cheers,
Wayne

No news is good news -- Tom Weller

Hi Debby.
Just a quick update. Still have my job, good news, Ca. voters voted down all the ridiculous tax and spend propositions, great news, going to spend a week in Yosemite, communing with nature and generally decompressing, terrific news. That's about it. I'll post a couple of pictures when we get back.

Sarah and I have been working on working on the house... little be little, step by step.Had a nice wet spring and now have gone almost three weeks without a drop... in our "wettest month", to boot. We better get some pretty soon or everything is going to dry up and blow away.

Will have some good stuff including great photos in about two weeks. Wayne T. is coming over from San Diego next Thursday and he and I are going on a guys-only hiking and photo trip up to the Moab, UT area to explore Arches and Canyonlands National Parks. We’ll be there for five days, and are planning to see and do a lot!

Work has been very busy. I'm just keeping my nose to the grindstone, plus the older my mom gets, the more help she needs. It keeps me off the streets. Too bad Fayetteville only has one street. lol

I hope others lead a more exciting life than I.

Hey Deb!

News, eh? ...Dave Eckerson is being inducted to the hall of distinction next week, may 28. Dave Vermilya and I are going to see what he has to say... also some grub. The one disappointment with the gig is that they stopped inviting our old teachers several years ago... more news? Dave V, Cheryl, a Brit friend of DV's, and I went to the zoo last week and got sunburned. Now how can you beat that for excitement, and oh yeah, my computer got fried last week... don't buy an HP Pavilion series model! Playing baseball tomorrow nite in Syracuse MSBL... going for a third consecutive championship this season. I'm the pappy... at least 15 years older than anyone else on the Syracuse Reds... real nice guys. And my mom is looking pretty well, tho her blood sugar is up in the high 200's and on insulin; as opposed to about 150 and controling by diet before she was admitted to the nursing home at James Square.

Catch you later Deb!

Best, Frank

Well we are doing OK, Denise lost her job at WAMU but is doing consulting so ends are still meeting. Luckily we get Health Insurance from my old employer XRX (for a price).
Our next adventure is a cruise to Alaska for ten days starting a week from Saturday. We are doing some glacier hiking and halibut fishing along the way. Also visiting Vancouver and Victoria at the end of the cruise.
Still riding my bike and swimming most every day, planning on a few races this summer.
The next project we hope will be a reality TV show (The MAN PLAN series)…….. Denise used her plan on me 17 years ago and it worked. Since then she has consulted with a few of her girlfriends who also had very positive results. Needless to say a book is almost complete and a Ca. reality TV film company is VERY interested in a possible series. More to follow over the next couple of months.
And yes we had a earth quake this week but we are still 1 mile from the ocean so out property value hasn’t gone up yet. Maybe the next one will put us closer to the beach!

East meets West

Dan McCabe and Dave Eckerson

We had coffee with Dave Eckerson and wife Connie today. We caught up on as much as two hyper talkers could in an hour. We all have a lot of interest in the Northwest. I've been here 21 years and have only scratched the surface of all the wonders here. I realize a sense of place every day and appreciate not being in Kansas anymore (I never was in Kansas except to drive across it, but you know what I mean; right Toto?) The weather and climate here are set for maximum gardening. The soil is the finest and was all imported from Montana and will grow just about anything with a little organic matter added. We have the largest front yard open pit mine on our block and will finish our complete landscape makeover before the next millennium. Connie is from Anacortes Washington and Patty is from Corvallis , Oregon . I think this is what they mean by east meets west.

I tried...

I sent a message to about 40 people today -- have heard back from 2.

Many of us face turmoil these days. I am dealing with my 89 year old Mother who has dementia. I was seeing her everyday but recently moved her to another assisted living facility about 25 miles away. She needed more care and fortunately I found a small residential care center for her. She has her own room which is big in the elderly world of care. Most are shared spaces. I thought it was important for my mother to maintain a level of privacy. She is doing so much better in this facility. I see her less often each week but when we're together there is more conversation now. When I moved her in April she was using a wheel chair and barely speaking. Now just a few weeks later, she is using the walker again and laughing and doing much better. She's also put on 10 pounds. So even though this was a difficult time for me -- moving her again -- she is better for it.
I am trying to rebound from a bout with bronchitis which is going on now for 3 weeks. I thought I had broken a rib from all the coughing. My primary care doctor referred me to the ER -- his office did not want to treat people with flu like symptoms. At the time I had a fever, chills and congestion. So it was 2 hours in the ER. Am still on antibiotics. It's been tough to get rid of. Then my husband John came down with something similar over the weekend. He's rebounding from that now.
Well, I hope everyone is doing all right. Hope to hear from more of you.
Thanks to Larry English and Kirsten Fleisher for responding.

Not Hearing from anyone

Sorry to say that I have no news at all from classmates. Almost no one responded to my last email request for news. Sandy Jackson Epoch is the only brave soul to post her own message.
Thanks, Sandy.
Where is everyone else?
Some are not answering emails either.
I'm stuck.

San Antonio

Just thought I'd drop into the blog and share my trip to San Antonio. My daughter has corporate conferences there twice a year and I go with her to take care of Dylan. He is 3 years old and is a joy to be with. We stay at the Drury on the Riverwalk. We take the riverboat tour, experience the children's museum, wall of mirrors which we do with 3D glasses, Tower of the America's and definitely walk the river 24/7. The Riverwalk is the most visited attraction in Texas next the total visits to the Alamo just a couple blocks away. Some of the best Mexican, BBQ and Steak houses can be found on the Riverwalk. There are so many other attractions to make a full week stay a busy one. On the way home we stopped at the biggest waterpark in North America, Schlitterbahns. Right now it is a cool 76 degrees in Austin, but it will soon be back in the 90's. Then in the three digits later this summer. I will need a break from both the heat and running around after a three year old, so I will be heading to San Diego for a few weeks in July. Hope everyone has a lot planned for the summer and the weather is good for you. Take care and let me know what Y'all are doin this summer.

BSOD

BSOD -- blue screen of death
This is what is called a computer failure when you get the blue screen. It means you're screwed. It happened to me last week. I downloaded some screen saver and then decided to remove it. I went to the control panel and to the add/remove button. I couldn't find the screen saver program but I decided to remove some "rarely used programs." Do not do this. I did something to the software mix and the next morning when I turned the computer on I couldn't get Windows to start up.
I started reading my "help" books and they confirmed my fears. I unplugged everything and too the tower to Best Buy Geeks. I had to wait until the store opened. I stood outside with the computer and waited. Mr. Geek said we'll charge you $199 to fix everything or you can "recover" it yourself. He confirmed BLUE SCREEN.
I went home. For the next many, many hours I proceeded to recover and reload programs and get my stuff back. I lost my Internet connection software with ATT and now use IE8. I had to reload Word and just about everything else. I do run backup but it's coded and I wasn't sure how to retrieve it.
So I'm pretty much back now. The blog was not effected except I have to redo a lot of my photo storage. It's not in the order I had it in.
So, a word to the wise == do not remove software in the add/remove section unless you are certain you will not destroy everything and get BSOD.
