Kirsten Mackey Fleisher

Hello everyone...It has been an eventful summer for me. Early in June my mother fell and broke her hip while visiting my sister Paula in Fayetteville. She had hip replacement at Crouse and rehab at Loretto/Fahey. By the end of the month we brought her down to her condo in Florida for further rehabilitation. I so much appreciate the kind words and support from Frank Carroll and Libby Rogers Cowan offered me while I struggled through that difficult period with Mom. I spent most of the summer with Mom in Bradenton, Florida, and she has made remarkable progress. In addition, my dog had four darling puppies just days after we arrived in Florida! Never a dull moment! I did take a two week break and went on my annual mission trip to San Lucas Toliman, Guatemala. As usual, it was exciting and rewarding trip. For the most part I ran a small, makeshift pharmacy for the medical team, and this year we also passed out bags of food to those in the greatest need. School starts in days, so I will be back in my kindergarten classroom very soon. I've sent a photo of Mom, my niece Jenny Little and myself a the gazebo at Fahey, and another of me in San Lucas Toliman.

Dick Shanahan

Finally had some communication from Dick. He and his wife Maureen are riding the crest of health and hospitals. Maureen is getting the last of Chemo for Uterine cancer and it seems to be in remission. Dick has been back and forth to the Cleveland Clinic getting tested and retested for the lung operation. He now thinks the operation will take place late winter 2009 or early spring. In any event, keep Dick and his family in your thoughts and prayers.

Greetings from Phil Evans

Phil Evans sent a short note. He's thriving in retirement in MI. He's so busy he has to take a vacation from all the activities. Phil and I played clarinet in band. He was always 1st clarinet and was very good. I never practised and just winged it all the time. Phil always scoffed at me for that. After Phil left sophomore year, Dave Milan took over the 1st chair. I was next to him then.

Making Pefect Lemonade

In order to make the perfect lemonade start with fresh lemons.
Ice - make ahead of time, place long strips of lemon rind in the ice tray
Ice ring - take your Jell-O mold, place circles of lemons in the ring, fill with water and freeze.
To Juice Your Lemons - roll it on the counter and loosen the membranes; cut in half; use the tines of a fork to twist the juice out into your glass.

Debby,
Once again thanks for reminding (prodding) those of
us who are less than loquacious. This summer has been relaxing, hot and humid most of the time here in Tallahassee. In June Renae and I visited my mother in Waynesboro, VA. As you may know, she lives near the top of a mountain a stone's throw from the Blueridge Parkway. No electricity (other than a generator), no TV and the nearest neighbor is about a mile down the little dirt road. We took our two granddaughters, went for long walks and took them fishing for the first time. Since the only artificial light was kerosene lamps, we went to bed rather early, woke up rather early and ate often. We played cards and games and just talked with family. Just in case you're wondering, there is an inside bathroom but we had to start the generator to shower or fill the tank and empty the WC.

July saw Renae start a new job at the FSU stadium and I was asked to teach a class for the middle/secondary mathematics college of education. The class is for students who will be taking their teaching internship in the spring or next fall. Hopefully I can give them enough to perhaps mitigate some of those intern/first year mistakes in the classroom. (If any of our blog readers have ideas or suggestions I'd love to here from them.)

My wife and I met our kids and grand kids in Las Vegas last week. Yes, it was hot! Yes, we lost money in every casino we walked through! But, we saw a couple of shows spent a lot of time at he pool, rode a couple of coasters, won some stuffed animals for the grand kids, saw Hoover Dam, played golf and did a ton of walking/gawking at the sights and the casinos.
Thanks for all you are doing to help keep us in touch.

Melinda Mussi Lockwood

No much going on here! Had knee surgery on the 11th and have been out of commission all week but I must say that immediately following the surgery I had no more knee pain!
I am looking forward to getting back out on my bike and back into my kayak. My daughter, granddaughter and I each bought a little 10' kayak at Bass Pro Shops Britt's is pale blue while her mother's and mine are multi-colored. Have been having a great time at a series of lakes that are about five minutes from our home. My largest hurdle has been my knee(s). Have all sorts of trouble getting in and out; once in I'm all set but I went into surgery with multiple black & blue marks from my efforts! My new nickname "Happy Feet" will no longer fit as I can actually bend my knee more easily now. We had several moments of great hilarity (at my expense!) the last few weeks.
My right knee will be next up (probably in a couple of months) and while I am grateful for the invention of general anesthetic, I do not appreciate the after effects and am not looking forward to the 48 hours following the procedure. All in all, however, it is good to feel so well! I am lucky to have access to some excellent doctors!
Our granddaughter starts Jr. high this year - heaven help us! Her mom keeps her fairly busy with church youth group activities (horse camp, etc.). She will be involved with the theatre group at school this year and now has her first boyfriend. Her mom is focused on making sure her time is well-balanced with home/church/school. In addition, Kim is finally finishing her degree (at long last). Our eldest grandson, Joseph, starts school this year and I am confident that every teacher he encounters will be amazed by his brilliance (this according to our son & his wife ~ ; )
All in all looks like we're off to a great start to a new academic year.
How have you been? I am been remiss in my search time for old classmates - sometimes just get so caught up in other projects that I lose track of how quickly time is passing!
Wonderful to hear from you.
M

More from Larry English

You are right, there is a LOT of new information. Thanks for all of the work, it must be a big “part time” job to keep it all going.

Moved my son Justin into his new house in Durham, NC the weekend of 7/26. Loaded a U-Haul up here in Manlius with some of his stuff. Drove to Bethesda, MD to pick up the rest of his stuff from his year at the NIH. Collapsed at a very nice Marriot down the street. I really did not want to walk into the lobby as we were both quite dirty and very sweaty, I think that is a generational thing, my son had no reservations at all… so I let him check us in. Drove to Durham, NC the next day and unloaded everything. I will tell you this, Stickley’s mission Oak sleeper sofa is lined with lead, I thought I would have a heart attack carrying that in.

Last Saturday (8/2) drove down to NYC to get my daughter Lindsey on a plane to Dhaka, Bangladesh to visit two of her friends from Ithaca College. The trip turned out to be a trial, she was supposed to depart NYC at 2:55 PM, due to terrible thunderstorms she did not actually leave until 5:05 AM on Sunday. Not a lot of fill in flights to Hong Kong. Then as a result of the scheduling issues she had a 14 hour layover in Hong Kong, so I got her a hotel room and she slept., too well it turns out. She was supposed to pick up her replacement tickets at 5 PM Hong Kong time (5 AM our time), I decided to call at 5:40 AM our time just to check, she was sound asleep. Good thing Dad is so.. I think the word that they use is not proper for the blog. Then she called me at 6:30 PM her time to tell me the “good” news that she had been able to get a replacement flight on Bimon Air which left 2 hours earlier than her Cathay Pacific flight that I had booked. On a nice DC10 none the less. Bimon Air has such a poor safety record that the FAA won’t allow them to fly into the US and the DC10 stopped being made in 1988. I thought of Bob Newhart’s Grace L. Ferguson Storm Door and Airline Company skit!! So I prayed for 3 hours and 40 minutes that she would actually make it. The concept that one airline is not just like the rest never occurred to her. Not sure what she will do in Dhaka for 14 days during the rainy season, but I simply could not talk her out of it. Having experienced it myself when I was in Viet Nam I know that what WE call rain is a sprinkle compared to what they get.

Will let you know how it turns out.

That’s all the news from our corner of Manlius. Still drive by the old school often, to think that we were the first class through there 46 years ago makes me feel VERY old!!

More Storms

After 2 incredible days of 95 plus heat and humidity, we had another storm. It was great too. Some of the most spectacular lightning I've ever seen. But it was short lived, my enjoyment that is. Just as I arrived home after 2 hours of dog training -- one hour for the puppy, Mavis and one hour for the 2 year old Bailey, the lights went out. NO POWER for about 8 hours. That means no fans, no air, no nothing. Fortunately I have a small battery operated TV and a battery operated FAN Light which helps move the air a little. About 4 am the power came back on. But, I'm still exhausted. More storms are expected.

10 Warning Signs of Alzheimer's

1. Memory loss: Forgetting recently learned information is one of the most common early signs of dementia. A person begins to forget more often and is unable to recall the information later.

2. Difficulty performing familiar tasks: People with dementia often find it hard to plan or complete everyday tasks. Individuals may lose track of the steps involved in preparing a meal, placing a telephone call or playing a game.

3. Problems with language: People with Alzheimer’s disease often forget simple words or substitute unusual words, making their speech or writing hard to understand. They may be unable to find the toothbrush, for example, and instead ask for "that thing for my mouth.”

4. Disorientation to time and place: People with Alzheimer’s disease can become lost in their own neighborhood, forget where they are and how they got there, and not know how to get back home.

5. Poor or decreased judgment: Those with Alzheimer’s may dress inappropriately, wearing several layers on a warm day or little clothing in the cold. They may show poor judgment, like giving away large sums of money to telemarketers.

6. Problems with abstract thinking: Someone with Alzheimer’s disease may have unusual difficulty performing complex mental tasks, like forgetting what numbers are for and how they should be used.

7. Misplacing things: A person with Alzheimer’s disease may put things in unusual places: an iron in the freezer or a wristwatch in the sugar bowl.

8. Changes in mood or behavior: Someone with Alzheimer’s disease may show rapid mood swings – from calm to tears to anger – for no apparent reason.

9. Changes in personality: The personalities of people with dementia can change dramatically. They may become extremely confused, suspicious, fearful or dependent on a family member.

10. Loss of initiative A person with Alzheimer’s disease may become very passive, sitting in front of the TV for hours, sleeping more than usual or not wanting to do usual activities.

I had complicated knee surgery in March, and still am on the mend. I was in a full leg brace, no movement at all for nearly two months. I get around fine now, but it hurts at night. I went on a road trip to Pa. for a big WWII weekend in Reading. That is the stuff I collect, and care about those vets. I spent one night with Terry Euston and his wife. He is in the process of beating his third cancer. This one was a dilly! Total marrow transplant, nearly died. He is fine and back at work. He doesn't hear from Stu Davis much, nor do I. I ran into Sam Flatt up here, but he is not our class. I can give you Greg Wells new address. He came up for a week and we put a workshop onto my house. It is PO Box # 501 Old Forge NY 13420. He is fine, and loves living in the Adirondacks. I can't think of any other 66'ers that I have seen recently, but I keep my eyes open. I am working a few days a week on an old wood tour boat again this year, so ya never know who is going to come to take a ride out to Singer Castle. My son gets married in Oct. I'll have to get on that blog thing and write something goofy again. Take care, Jamie
