Thelma G. Steenburg
Thelma G. Steenburg February 1, 2010 Thelma Steenburg, 93, of Fayetteville, passed away Monday at her home of natural causes. Mrs. Steenburg was born January 27, 1917 in Madrid, NY, to Thomas and Lida Goldie. She graduated in 1936 with double majors from Potsdam and Crane School of Music. She was married to Carl J. Steenburg of Spencer, NY, New Year's Day 1943. They were married for 53 years with two daughters, Linda Coppernoll and Terry vonSneidern of Fayetteville, followed by four grandchildren, Jodi Coppernoll of New Rochelle, Keith and Renee Coppernoll of Clay, Lars and Heather vonSneidern of Portland, OR and Jennifer and Mark Haas of Camp Hill, PA; and a great-granddaughter, Jillian Coppernoll. Mrs. Steenburg taught for 37 years throughout New York State. She was a beloved and well-respected teacher for 28 years at Fayetteville Elementary, teaching first and fourth grade and as a reading specialist. When asked why reading as a specialty, her reaction was, "Reading empowers a person and is an ability that can never be taken away." She retired in 1983. She had many passions and hobbies such as gardening, traveling, golf, SU sports and Yankees baseball. In addition, she was an award winning Master Quilter, however her main passion was her family whom she loved unconditionally. A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at the United Church of Fayetteville, 310 E. Genesee St., Fayetteville.
