The most exciting event for this summer was performing Indian music alongside a famous Hindustani vocalist by the name of Pandit Vijay Kichlu. I had studied with him in Calcutta this Spring and had a chance to bring him to Baton Rouge for a concert at the Hindu Vedic Cultural Center on July 25, 2008. The picture of the three musicians has him in the middle, with myself providing accompaniment on vocals and harmonium, a small reed-driven organ (like an accordion). The tabla player on the left is Andrew McLean from New Orleans. The concert was a huge success and I look forward to more programs in the future. The woman in the other picture is my wife Kajal of 29 years. She is from Calcutta, and an outstanding artist and person. As you can see, I am basically an Indophile--it all started with a term paper that I wrote on India in the sixth grade for Mrs. Balmer. Does anyone remember her?

All the best,

Guy Beck

Spoke with Rick Cook this morning. He's busy winterizing his home in MI and getting wood split for the first cold snap. He's still working for Chevron in CO and gets called back when they need a hand.

Dick Shanahan

Good news from Dick. He has finally been placed on the transplant list for a new lung. And his wife Maureen is doing well with her fight with ovarian cancer. Dick, always a man of few words, says he's doing OK.

Hi Debby,

have been thinking about you and the blog lately, but have been very busy with visitors from NY and hurricane IKE. Yes I am in Texas these days with my grandson and loving every minute of it. I will be going back to San Diego for a month in October. Ike did not hit Austin but the evacuees are here and needing a lot of help. The devistation is so widespread and I think it will be weeks if not months before people can return home to the coast. I have been slow in responding to my emails and hope to get back on track soon. Thanks for your wake up call. I hope to keep in touch and contact a few classmates to do the same. Take care and I hope your weather is a lot better too.

Dan sends greetings from Oregon. He says they are "busy as beavers" this fall and hopes to send more news soon.

Thoughts

I hardly post anything about myself so I thought I would take a moment and say how wonderful it is for the blog to have blossomed as it has lately. I've been hearing from all new people. Views of the site have gone from around 10 per day now to about 30 per day. And we're getting classmates from all over the country and world.
Some have expressed to me that they were not that well known in high school and don't feel they're a part of the class, but I think now that we've reached this age, we should put this kind of thing behind us and just take joy and fun in finding out about each other.
Thanks for all the great responses and emails and I look forward to hearing more soon.
Debby

...Very busy with my new job! A lot of travel...Our family is doing fine. Ronnee and I are getting used to empty nesting now that both of our kids are in college. Michael is a junior at Belmont Univ. in Nashville in the music business school. He is in his second internship at Warner Bros. He is in Phi Kappa Tau fraternity and carrying a 3.96 GPA.
Our daughter Sarah is a frershman at Mich State Univ in the PreVet program. She got her jockeys license this past summer and spent the summer excercising horses for owners and trainers in Philadelphia, PA. Ronnee and I moved to Fayetteville a couple of years ago. Much more to tell but I am doing this on my blackberry at the LA airport. More to come...Hope this note finds you and your family happy and healthy...

Just turning 60 and feeling pretty good much of the time. I spent the entire past decade trying to re-invent myself professionally. Like most lawyers, I did not enjoy my work. Since my sons were grown and I married a man with some money, I had the freedom to try out alternatives. Nothing worked. My older son was diagnosed with schizophrenia--a truly horrible fate for him, and for me too--and I learned about Social Security Disability. I volunteered for two years for NAMI, the National Alliance on Mental Illness, but quit in frustration because of the amateur quality of volunteer work. Finally I decided to set up a limited practice, doing Social Security claims for the disabled. I got an office set up along the back wall of my cabin in Willow, Alaska (Home of the Iditarod), signed up some clients, and... broke my leg while out walking the dog! So now I am recovering in Sacramento where we have a little old house in the suburbs which has the one advantage of being flat. I will increase my client base as soon as I can negotiate a steep, icy hill again. I really love the Alaskan wilderness. Sacramento is lovely with a million flowering trees, but the traffic is insane and the people are not brilliant (except for Arnold).

You are delightfully persistent! Because I am still teaching I don’t have as much time to blog as the majority of our classmates it seems, but I am living in northern New York . I do get to Manlius because my folks still live there in the same house. They are still mobile and coherent, but without each other they would not be able to cope with the house. My daughters live in Sacramento , CA because there are few jobs here in the north country. My son is in college at Morrisville. My husband is an earth science teacher so we have summers off and we spend the bulk of the summer in California enjoying our granddaughter. She is 2 and we love every second we spend with her.
That pretty much sums it up!

Class of 1968 Reunion

Tom Ford from the Class of 1968, reports their 40th reunion, this past August, was a success and a lot of fun. A splinter group of about 10 people had a mini reunion in South Carolina. At FM, lots of familiar faces were present and some had changed so much that they were unrecognizable. More parties are planned for next summer just to stay in touch.

To all the regular blog readers

Hi there. If you are a regular blog checker, I would love to have you post something. You see, I have Site Meter and I can see what part of the country you are from but I can't tell who you are. The site gives me information about the computer that has tapped into the blog and how long you stay. That's how I know how many hits the blog has gotten. Today there have been 11 which does not include me in St. Louis when I look at the blog. It gives me an idea of how much activity there is.

But I would really love some feedback occasionally. I did get one comment tonight. Someone told me they liked the hummingbird.
By feed back, I'd like to know what you would like to see especially now when so many people are being especially unresponsive.

What I do each month is send out a group email reminding classmates to check the blog and I supply the address. The hits always go up and then drop right down. Then I write people individually to see if I can get responses that way.
Today I sent out 20 emails. So far I've gotten 5 responses.

So why not try posting yourself. It's very easy. If you need help just email me. OK

No Classmate News

I have nothing to post on classmates due to the lack of information lately. No one is posting or sending me news. A few months ago when news of Dick S. was on the blog, there were up to 40 hits a day. Now the hits or views are done to 5 or 6 a day. Not sure why but I hope it changes soon.

Congratulations to Tom Weller and Barbara on their wedding!

Tom Weller

I have been going out with my better half Barbara on and off for a number of years, so we figured it was about time to make an honest woman out of her. When we were in Juneau, we rented a helo, a wedding official(no J.P.'s in AK), and a photographer. We buzzed around the mountains until we found a pretty good spot. You have to admit that an ice cave on the front face of a glacier is a pretty good backdrop for a wedding ceremony! So now, once again, I'm an old married man or perhaps an old, married, man. Take care and please keep the blog going. It's really enjoyable to read about all the folks from the class. And that was "How I spent my summer vacation" by Tom Weller
P.S. check out the wedding shoes. They go well with the tux, don't you think?

Denise and I just got back from our trip to the Jersey shore. We rented a beach house and invited all our kids and grandkids for a week in the sun. I must admit the beaches at Huntington Beach are pristine as compared, we also don't have to pay 8.00 per person to use them. Other than that we all had a great time with perfect weather. The attached picture are the grandkids. From the left Mattie (9), Me (61)Denise (?) holding Kaia (10 months) Olivia (3) and finally Alex (14)....The second JPEG is our son Kevin an wife Karyn (Kaia's parents), finally daughter Jennifer and husband Ralph (they own the other 3)....As you can see we are loving retirement, off to Mexico in two weeks for a 4 day cruise then to Milwaukee as my son Mike is getting married 10/12/08. Keep up the blog work as I check it all the time for updates!

All is definitely well with me, although we've been very busy. Seems like our dance card is full for the foreseeable future. We spent a week up at Priest Lake camping, kayaking, swimming and just hangin' out during the day and then dancing to live music at a nearby resort in the evening. It was very difficult to get back to the working world. Last week my son and his family came to visit. I've attached photos of Priest Lake and of my grandkids - Esha (with me) is 3-1/2 and Elek is 14 months and walking, or rather running, non-stop. Today (Labor Day) is the day to catch up on chores and correspondence and maybe a little rest, as well. Hope all is well with you, too.

Keep on blogin'. Dave
