April Fools' Day

April Fool's Day
April Fool's Day or All Fool's Day,holiday of uncertain origin, known for practical joking and celebrated on the first of April. Prior to the adoption of the Gregorian calendar in 1564, the date was observed as New Year's Day by cultures as varied as the Roman and the Hindu. The holiday is considered to be related to the festival of the vernal equinox, which occurs on Mar. 21. The English gave April Fool's Day its first widespread celebration during the 18th cent.

Debby - I am thriving and up to my eyeballs in work as the Exec. Sec'y of the Cleveland AFLCIO. I can send a photo and news articles later but wanted to respond so that you didn't think I had left the planet. I have also offered Dick Shanahan a place to stay when he comes to Cleveland and he has accepted. I will send photos/articles as soon as I figure out the technology. My older son Ben has two children (Ian, 3 1/2 and Reeve, 1 1/2) and lives in NE Vt. My younger son Nick is an engineer and works for a wind turbine company in Troy NY. My Mom died the December after the Reunion.

Best,
Hattie

Maria Pulos Levy

Dear Debby, Nice to hear from you!! What fun it must have been to see Rick again. He certainly sounds just the same. This is a really, really big country. I just returned from Madison and it took six and a half hours just to travel from the east side of the midwest to the west side. whew!! Harriet, Nancy, Barb (Belton) and I are getting together with our daughters in July in Florida for a "Lost Week-End." Curiously, we each have daughters whose names begin with a "K" sound; Kristina, Keely, Kerry and Colbert. This is the biggest event of the year for me and I can't wait. In addition, Colbert and I have never been to Florida. We're staying in Nancy's parent's place in Jupiter. What a wonderful name for a town!
Thanks, again, for keeping up the great class website. I love to hear about everyone and their life's endeavors.

Frank Carroll

Happy Birthday to Frank whose b'day
is today 3/28. Bruce Coleman's birthday is also today.

Another March Birthday

Belated birthday greetings to Gary Revercomb who turned 60 last week.

Happy Birthday Ralph

As you stated it's "only a number" but it does seem a
milestone. I'm 60
today and glad to have made it this far and been in
good health. Remember
our elders saying "if you have your health, you have
everything" That
statement never meant much until now.
Next month is a Helicopter squadron reunion for me
and we are all very
excited about seeing old friends, so far around 200.
I spent two hours on the phone with an old buddy whom
I haven't seen in 39
years. He's coming to the reunion so we can act like
kids again and relive
some of our good times, like when we took an R+R in
Hong Kong, oops, better
leave that one alone.
I hope your flooding is not too bad.
I really enjoy all your work on the FM site, thanks
for your efforts.
Sincerely
Ralph

Hi Debby,One bit of great news.... I'm expecting! Should be a grandfather in September in time for my 60th birthday. Youngest daughter Alison lives in Strasbourg France with her husband so a little too far away for a grandchild but I'll figure out a way to play with him/her. Just not sure I'll be able to understand when he/she starts talking.

Dan McCabe

Hi Debby,
.....
In Oregon, Portland is the largest city and by national standards is quite livable. I’m working enough to consume most of my waking weekday hours when prep and post work necessities are included. I took up commercial truck driving a year and a half ago and work for a regional food commodity distributor like Roadway, Yellow, or Reddaway only food. My wife Patty is a fabulous watercolor Artist. She teaches watercolor to age 55+ folks at Clark College across the Columbia in Vancouver WA . She gives workshops about 10-15 times a year and has a few workshops at Sitka Center on the coast in the summer. http://www.sitkacenter.org/ her name is Patricia Schmidt and has been at this since she could put crayon to wall and has a line of 10 fine art greeting cards, original watercolor art and Giclee’ prints.

Portland and Oregon are the most fabulous places. We are in early but significant spring with daffodils, early Rhododendrons Azaleas, Camellias, Pieris, flowering plums, cherries, pears, Bergenia, Candytuft, Forsythia, Quince, and a thousand other things. It stays cool and rainy for a few months so the spring flowering season just goes on and on. (We talk about our cold wet climate to scare people away) It’s so mild here there are palm and banana trees. The weather is worse in Syracuse than it is here. I needed snow tires twice this year on a few icy mornings. We never had enough snow to even think about shoveling. Now that I think about it, I don’t even own a snow shovel. We are north of the 45th parallel which dissects Oregon 25 or 30 miles south of Portland , so we are actually way north but heated by the Japanese current even though the ocean is 100 miles away on the other side of a mountain range. Oh my God, I could write a book on the virtues of Oregon and all the fun things to do in this incredibly beautiful and diverse place.

Flannel shirts have been traded in for sandals and micro-brew beer, fine wines, and of course coffee heaven. We have the nicest airport I’ve ever seen, huge ocean going terminals for containers, Japanese cars, grain and lumber exports and major railroads heading north, south and East. We can see 12,000 ft Mt Hood from any where in town and Mt St Helens has been puffing for a few years as seen from anywhere but the lowest spots around here. The coast which is entirely within the public domain makes the east coast south of Cape Cod look like a sandbox or water hazard at a golf course. Speaking of golf, you can play year round here if you want. (I don’t play but rather apply my irrigation and horticulture knowledge). Had enough?

I’ve been way behind in catching up with you. I remember pretty much everyone from the great class of ’66. My birthday was in January so I suppose we’re all turning 60 at about the same time. Film at 11.

The best to everyone!

Dan

More Flooding in MO

Flooding all around us. Glad we're on a big hill. John's gun club in Pacific, MO is right near the Meramec River and is expected to be under water any time now. John and others worked all this week after work to remove traps and save what they could.
It's especially bad out west in our area because the Missouri and Meramec Rivers are close by and all the low areas are flooded. John's way into work in St. Louis has been greatly effected and he just informed me he'll be at the station all weekend because,"that is what I do."
Instead of a hunting or fishing widow I become a news widow.

We found our first tick of the season on Bailey. An ugly black one.

Vivian Bender Munson

I'm doing fine. Ten years ago I married a pilot who was just retiring. We have been spending winters in California and summers in Alaska. It sounds idyllic and it was for awhile. We did a lot of renovating of old houses and built a pretty little cabin here in Willow, which is famous one day a year as the Start of the Iditarod. ... moving back and forth became too much. I am setting up a new, laid-back practice in elder law and Social Security Disability claims. I do not have the energy I used to have, but then, neither will my clients.

Hope you are okay with all the flooding down your way. It sounds monumental. It's been a winter to remember here in Madison too. Record snowfall, ice and cold. We had one storm that started out as two inches of rain and then a foot of snow on top. The whole area was a mess with some of the worst driving I've ever seen and the temps were in the basement for weeks (below zero, mostly) so nothing got any better, the roads had 6 inch deep trenches to drive in for most of February . On the day of one of the worst storms, I couldn't make it to work and was clearing the driveway with a CAT D8, pay loader ,10,000 horsepower stem shovel, nuclear powered, snow obliterator, when Carol came out of the shower covered in shampoo (reminded me of a wet, mad hen) to tell me there was no water. Sure enough the pump had quit 110 feet down in the well. It took 3 hours just to chisel away enough ice to see the well head. We were fortunate to find a company that pulled out the pump and replaced it the same day. I felt bad for the fellows out in sub-zero temps getting soaked but they did a great job. I just had to shovel fifty dollar bills down the hole. You have to keep laughing or it will overtake you. Married life is going very well despite the trials of winter (clips from "The Shining" did come to mind occasionally though). Carol took a week and went to Florida to see her daughter and returned last night. I stayed here with the dog who also has cabin fever. It looks like we are warming a bit . One of the four Wisconsin seasons is over, known as "SNOW" now we can start another "MUD" followed by "MOSQUITOS" and then we get to my favorite, FALL, which really is nice except that it is followed again by "SNOW." We are discussing finding some property in Florida to afford us some relief from this changing climate in the future. I really don't remember winter being this bad in north west Montana or upstate NY.
Really all is well and very busy at work. Sure wish I was in a position to retire NOW.
It's very nice to hear that Dick Shanahan has some help along his rough road. I wish him the best.
Remember, this is all in jest and life is but a joke. I hope you are well.
Talk to you soon.
Ralph

Floating Away

We've had so much rain in MO today, I think the whole state is about to float away. Yesterday we had thunder and lightning and pea sized hail. Today continuous rain, then fog. My poor dogs don't even want to go out, but when they do, the mud they bring back is unbelievable.

Hi Debby,
There is not much new in the NEWS department to share.
I am living in the suburban Philadelphia area, where I have been for the past 24 years. I have 2 daughters, 20 & 24, who are in the area. The oldest is the Marketing Director for Grishko, a ballet slipper company. The younger one is at Drexel studying Interior Design, but I think will end up in furniture manufacturing. I am in the business and occasionally speak with Gordy Web.
Since I am most often the one behind the camera, I don't have many photos of myself. I have attached one that I had a stranger take of my younger daughter and me on a trip to Annapolis, MD.
I hope all is well with you.
Best Regards, Jim

Bruce Coleman Memorial

Hello Everyone,

Please join us to celebrate Bruce's birthday (60th) and his life, by listening to some great live music, played by our friend Bill Nowak and his band "Five to One". It will be held on Friday, March 28th, at 5:30-8:30pm, at the Sportsmen Tavern, 326 Amherst St., near the intersection of Grant St. Please pass the word along to anyone you think might like to attend. Also, Bill has invited anyone interested in playing between sets to plan to do so. Looking forward to seeing you!

Well, I have you all beat a little! The magic number is 61 on 04/07/47. Next year will be SS if it’s still around for us.
Here are a couple of pictures from our trip last month to Club Med Cancun we took my daughter Jennifer and her family from freezing Cazenovia to the sandy beaches for 7 days.

My Birthday

Today, Monday, March 10th is my birthday. I'm 60. I know it's only a number, but it's a big, baby boomer number. Rick Cook's birthday was yesterday. Skip Doolittle's is today also. Frank Carroll turns on the 29th of March. Anyone else?

Just got a Verizon call from Frank. He's headed to Vero Beach, FL to catch some spring training baseball. He called from the Binghamton, NY area. He hopes to see Tad and Jane Collins and Cinda Meachem Sutton and maybe a few others from our class while he's in Florida.

Steve Bickelhaup

I am happy to report that Steve Bickelhaup is alive and well and living in the Atlanta area. He tells me that once his ties to the FM area diminished, he pretty much became entrenched in the Georgia scene. He's been married to the same person for 38 years and has 4 children. He works for Regions Bank. Although he has not participated in the reunions before, he is looking forward to the 45th reunion in the Fall of 2011.

Rick Cook

From Dinosaur, CO, on his way back home in Dewitt, MI, Rick stopped in St. Louis for a visit. His 2 1/2 year stint as consultant for Chevron Oil ended. We hadn't seen each other since early high school. But since we've been emailing and sending pictures since the reunion, it wasn't that difficult to pick right up.

We had a great time talking over history and stuff we each remembered. Then my husband, John and Rick spent some time talking about fly fishing, guns, hunting and of course dogs.

After FM, Rick went to more than one high school and graduated from one in Florida. So some of his memories of people from our class are a little hazy. After looking at yearbook pictures of the soccer team and homerooms, a lot of the faces seem to come back to him.

Dave Eckerson

I’m in Kabul for the next two months. My mission: get our USAID program on track.

At 59 years of age, I am living in a hooch … basically a shipping container modified to be a modular dorm room. Here in Kabul, Afghanistan.

Dave Eckerson

D,
Amazing how we always remember high school but little else in between .. hope your reunion w/cook is enriching. I'm here (Kabul, Afghanistan) until end March, then head to DC to catch opening day of the Nationals against Milwaukee.
We'll head to Uganda this summer, where I'll run one of the biggest US AID programs in the world (behind Iraq and Afghanistan). I'm extending an open invitation to anyone who wants to come out and see the gorillas and game parks ... we'll have lots of room to put people up....

Greetings from Willow, Alaska

Hello to everyone from F-M. I'm writing from our cabin in Willow, which is the starting point for the Iditarod Race today, Sunday, March 2nd. Willow is a very lightly populated area 75 miles north of Anchorage, on the highway to Denali National Park. I love it here. I tried to retire to California, where my husband has a place, but I like Alaska better. Just starting a laid-back practice helping disabled people file for Social Security benefits. Forget trial practice--too much stress. Best wishes./Users/vivianmunson/Desktop/SSCN0175.JPG
