Just did the Manlius Historical Society craft show this past weekend. Have had a fairly successful year with my leather craft sales at local craft shows. Besides Manlius, I have done the Chittenango OZstraviganza, N. Syracuse Family, Cazenovia CAVAC, Bridgeport Fireman Aux, Dewitt Community Church,Great Swamp Conservancy in Canastota and a few other shows. I have made as more this year than last with less shows. I have one scheduled show left - ESM Cosmetology on Nov 9. This has been a pretty good show. I enjoy doing the leather work and seeing people enjoying the products. Just add Leather Visor caps. Unfortunately, I don't have a web site, but if someone is interested, I do special orders for belts, drink holsters, visor caps, wristbands, necklaces, and more. People can email me or call (319)727-6459.
Hope you, and everyone are well. Will try and send more later.

Guy Beck's brother Jim has passed away at 63.
James Dale "Jim" Beck
-
Quiet in the halls of FM-but an infectious smile and a genuine interest in his fellow students... Jim was the true article, I was always expecting to hear he and Guy were founders of a band rivaling the "Doors". Now that I read about his generosity I know he was more concerned about others which certainly DOES NOT surprise me. I'm truly sorry to hear of Jim's passing, its time to ride the trains buddy....

,
Am near completion of a one year fellowship offered by the National Leadership Academy for the Public’s Health. The Academy receives funding for the fellowships (free to participants) from the National Network of Public Health Institutes which is funded, at least in part, for the Centers for Disease Control. Our four person team is one of 20 teams in the second cohort. The program goal is to move, team by team, community by community, toward a model of collective leadership. The concept for this came from the CDC when they recognized that over the last 20 years we have all learned pretty well about how to “collaborate,” which much of the time means mainly “share information to know what each other is up to.” What they think we need to move to “collective leadership” in which turf is maintained (where appropriate) while learning how to “co lead” across sectors on initiatives to improve communities’, and thus the nation’s, health. I lead our four person team as the “academic medical center” person and am joined by the executive director of our regional planning commission, the community engagement person from the United Way, and our state health department’s district director. We began our focus on “hunger” writ large and have evolved to develop “messaging” around food security that can be understood and shared by multiple sectors from business to government to health and human services.
I also recently became a Senior Fellow of the Health Research and Education Trust. HRET is a instrument of the American Hospital Association. Fellows “build upon scholarly efforts and research work of the HRET team, partnering organizations and individuals who support our mission to transform health care through research and education.” I’ve just begun in this role, but have already participated in two small efforts and will be speaking with 60+ senior hospital executives about “population health improvement in a predominantly rural setting” at a meeting in Florida in early March.
No retirement on the horizon.
Hate to say this, but … Go Red Sox!

Melinda Mussi Lockwood
Not too much to report here. We do have chickens now – Golden Comet is the breed. We purchased twelve in March (folks told us to get more than we wanted as we would lose some–we did not). We are averaging ten eggs a day now so I am in the egg business on a small scale. I am selling to a faculty member in the department and will be adding one more customer this week. I make enough to cover the cost of feed and I am fine with that.
Our garden has been terrific this year. We have more peppers that I would have imagined possible so we will be having pickled peppers through the winter and beyond. Tomatoes, corn, eggplant, beans, carrots, green and red peppers abound.
We are all healthy which is a blessing. I am having rotator cuff surgery in a couple of weeks and am dreading it. I fell a few years ago and tore my right rc. The surgery was difficult and recovery was horrific but that should is back to 100%. I tore my left one a year ago in April. I was helping a friend assemble a garment rack, lifted the top, turned, ouch! Went for an x-ray and was told it was a soft tissue injury and so went for physical therapy for a time. Did not work. Finally capitulated and went back to my orthopedic "guy." His email to me after seeing my MRI was, and I quote, "Melinda, you have a tear. A hug tear. When do you want to take care of it." Surgeons are not noted for having particular good bedside manners and he lives up to the reputation. He is terrific though and I do actually like him very much. Sugery is slated for September 11. I meet with the anesthesiology group next week. Whoopee.
Our fall canoe race, the Perche Creek Fall Five is coming up October 12 and it is looking like we will have another excellent turnout this year. We run two races a year; one in March and one in October. Sort of bookends to the racing season. We had the US Junior Olympic canoe team in the spring and the coach conducted a short coaching session following the race. We also welcome kayakers and SUP (Stand Up Paddling) participants. Our fall race is a two mile run and three mile canoe/kayak/SUP sprint. Great fun for the whole family.
By and large, life is good here in Columbia. Hope this is enough info for now.
Take care.

I wanted to share this picture with you of me and Tim Atseff at my Daughters wedding. All is well and I am truly blessed! The best to all the class. This picture surfaced recently of my buddy Tim and the wedding last fall. Paula and I are still working and enjoying every day. We went to Germany, Austria, and Switzerland this summer and it was fabulous. Now on to someplace we have not been. I will try and get you more pics. The door in Georgia is always open. The Best! Always, Kent.

I haven't responded until now because I am totally saddened that almost all of my close friends have died already; it makes one wonder. To give our classmates a little up-date- I have reached the ripe age of 65 in July-I have 3 sons and 1 daughter. My oldest son Brandon does not have any children as yet-My 2nd oldest son Benjamin has 2 sons-My 3rd oldest son Nate has 2 daughters-My daughter Sally has 1 son for a grand total of 5 grandchildren.
I went to Vietnam 1967-1968. I came out a mess. I was at Camp Carrol which was right on the DMZ further north than Kesahn.
I got married and it lasted 24 years. My 2nd marriage is still going on with my wife Judy-we have been married for 15 years now and live in Columbia, S.C.
Presently I am the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Department of South Carolina State Commander. I am very very involved in helping veterans and their families.
That's it for now.

you certainly are persistent, Debby
OK ...
Dave Eckerson retired from the Foreign Service at the end of July after 28 years of moving his bride and family around the globe. He'll be flying out to Seattle in early September, hooking up with some old buds and doing a "Fear and Loathing" road trip back to Virginia to kick off the next chapter of his life.

I retired from my teaching job June 30 this year and am now working part time for a company that sends me to schools of nursing around the country to do Live Reviews preparing the students for their licensing exam. I just got back from 2 weeks in Texas, which allowed me some time with my daughter and grandchildren who live in Dallas. The best part is that I get to choose if & where I go to the reviews!
In April I attended my Godfather's 100th birthday. My Godfather is Debbie Goode's father, if you remember her from the class of 1967. He lives in Limestone Gardens in Manlius and is in AMAZING shape for 100 years! Speaking of Debbie, I get the chance to see her 2-3 times a year, as she visits here on her way to cruising and I see her when I come to Manlius. I see Jane & Tad a couple of times a year and Larry Craigie usually only once a year. (You probably see him more often!)
In one week I'll be going on vacation to Alaska! I will be spending 5 days with my niece in Juneau before meeting up with friends in Anchorage. In May we will be going on a River Cruise through Portugul. I LOVE being retired! I haven't started getting Social Security yet, but that will be nice too. Made too much $$ to take it this year.

I have no news to share but I can tell you that I am looking forward to the 50th.
I have in my possession an unopened bottle of Canadian Club with a 1966 tax stamp! (I know that whisky doesn't improve with age once it's bottled, but if it's not opened it doesn't go bad either.)
God willing, I will bring it to the reunion to share and toast with the class.
If for some unforeseen reason I can't be there we will have to assign the responsibility to another classmate.
Cheers!
Best Regards,
Best Regards,

The summer is going by very
quickly. My wife Vicki and I love to garden. We only have a small garden and a
few fruit tree’s to tend. We have enjoyed many vegetables and so have the
neighbors. I think my wife plants too much, but she loves sharing with all our
friends and family. Our area has been hit with a lot of rain and the garden has
produced an over abundance. We picked peaches and pears from our tree’s but we
are not getting a good growth of apples. We will have to go to the orchards to
get them this fall.
We have both retired now even
though my wife says “this doesn’t feel any different than before”. Now she has
me at home all the time. She must be so happy. This is our update from the
Grace family …Bob and Vicki.

This is a picture of Sue Heiss and me at her 61st birthday party. Have been seeing Sue for 5 months. We went camping at Raquette Lake in July and are off to Paris next week. She is an avid basketball player and this week she participated in the National Senior Games in Cleveland (11,000+ athletes participated), her women's basketball team won the Gold Metal National Championship on Wednesday (July 31st). Go Sue!!!
At dinner in Paris at Le Cinq restaurant. Perfect weather and 6 wonderful days

Summertime
Hi all.
Went out to one of the public use cabins for the weekend a little while back. These are all over Alaska and can be rented out for a week at a time. This one was about 150 miles south of Anchorage, but it is the quintessential Alaska log cabin in the woods on a lake. Also thought I would add a pic or two of the primary mode of transport up here. Can't wait to do more of this.
Take care.

News from Camp Tellman
Am going to teach one more year. I teach 4th and 5th grade English as a second language and I love my little English language learners.
My wife Lisa have been working on our 33 foot Nauticat motorsailer. We are very close to refloating her and finishing the final cosmetics so we can travel in our retirement. We will travel North to the Chesapeake in the summer 2014 and South to Florida, Bahamas and Caribbean in Winter. It has been a five year project. Hopefully our health will continue and we can reap the fruits of our labors.
As an aviator we say:

Some of you may remember my mother - and here she is at her 90th birthday party. My year has been dominated by overseeing her care. Many of us, if we are lucky, are dealing with finding the best situation for our aging parents, and I am no exception. July 22 was a happy day for Mom, my sister, Paula and me as we toasted to another wonderful year!

How is everyone?
It would really help if some of you who are regular readers would post or send news. I must admit, that since there has been a lack of input I have some what neglected the site. Tom Weller has been a great contributor. Just send small items about what you're up to and I'll take it from there. OK? Great.
